KOA Campground Owner takes on fundraising challenge

Barry Stern wants your old RV, car, motorcycle or boat. Last year, he launched a new fundraising opportunity for KOA Care Camps. He sells used vehicles donated to Care Camps, and with his experience, he knows how to get top dollar for most every vehicle that’s donated. Depending on the type of vehicle, its condition, and location, Barry will find an appropriate online or live auction for it. In just its first year, he’s helped to raise more than $11,000 for KOA Care Camps.

While that total is certainly a good start, Barry is convinced the RV and auto auction program can do much more. He recently returned from the KOA Annual Convention, where he challenged his fellow campground owners to get the word out about the new program. With the right promotion, he’s sure he can help raise $250,000 by next year.

Vehicle donations are an easy solution to the nationwide downward trend for charitable giving, Barry said. Donating an old, unused vehicle is easy. In fact, on the new koaautodonations.org website, the form takes only one minute to fill out. All the donations are tax deductable, and Barry handles all the details from pickup to delivery. He’ll take any vehicle in any condition, including those that just need a one-way trip to a local scrap yard.

Like many KOA franchisees, Barry holds auctions and other fundraisers at his campground, but he challenged his fellow owners to join him in promoting the auto and RV donations as a way to bring in even bigger donations.

“This is a daily event,” Barry said. “People can donate every day of the year. It never sleeps.”
